Ecuador’s Illinizas Community Development Volunteer Project

by on Sunday, 6 May 2012

The Illinizas community is excited to welcome its first nursing and medical students in May 2012!

For the first time this May, ISV will host a number of medical and nursing students at one of our longest running Ecuador volunteer programs in the Illinizas community.

About the Illinizas project: ISV has been supporting the Illinizas community development project since our programs began in Ecuador in 2006. The project is located within the highland town of el Chaupi, 3,648m above sea level. Surrounded by three beautiful volcanoes, it sits at the base of a 149,000 ha/368,000 acre natural reserve that is home to thousands of native species.

In order to support the main goal of the project “conserve and protect the natural environment by raising the level of environmental awareness within the community,” since 2007, ISV volunteers have planted over 4,800 trees as part of reforestation efforts along streams and local watersheds, constructed local community gardens and  playgrounds, painted murals with conservation themes, constructed septic tanks, supported local income-generating enterprises, and taught English and the importance of nature to children and teenagers.

The Illinizas mountains - an amazing location for volunteers. (In their free time, many choose to take a guided hike!)

This year ISV will implement a new initiative through skilled volunteers in the areas of medicine and nursing. Participants with medical and nursing skills will provide support at the El Chaupi health center which has only one doctor, one nurse and one dentist to attend to more than 25 patients daily in addition to vaccination campaigns in nearby communities and visits to the local schools. Besides offering their assistance and knowledge at the health center, our skilled volunteers will also have the opportunity to learn about and experience the culture of the highland regions of Ecuador.

The help received by medical and nursing volunteers will be much appreciated and of great help to the people of Illinizas. Everyone here is very excited and looking forward to receiving our first skilled volunteers in May!
