Kathy Wang won a $1000 scholarship to travel on another ISV program because of her amazing photo (right), which she entered into ISV’s annual photography competition. Now Kathy’s claimed her prize and is enjoying another ISV program in Costa Rica

Kathy’s mesmerizing photograph was taken of her friends admiring elephants in Chobe National Park in Botswana during ISV’s optional Wild Africa Excursion. Unsurprisingly, this photograph won the attention of ISV’s Facebook audience who voted her the clear winner of the Adventure Tour category of the 2013-14 competition.

Kathy, a veterinary student from the University of Sydney in Australia, says that her favourite part of volunteering in South Africa with ISV was “working on the private reserve we were staying on. We were able to see so many magnificent African animals in their habitats and I know that what we were doing was benefiting those animals. We were staying so close to them – we could see the odd animal through the bedroom window!”

When it comes to the award winning photo itself, Kathy says she just happened to be in the right place at the right time. “It’s amazing how a camera allows you to capture a moment in time, and look back at that moment later on in life. I’m able to feel all the feelings I had when the photo was taken, which is something I treasure.”

After winning the $1000 scholarship, Kathy didn’t hesitate to snap up the chance to travel with ISV a second time. At the time this blog was posted (July 2015) Kathy was in Costa Rica on an ISV conservation volunteer project – but before leaving, Kathy told us she was most looking forward to “seeing the wildlife in Costa Rica, and if I’m lucky enough, baby turtles hatching!”
