A focused travel experience where you actively connect, learn, reflect and engage with your surroundings, can change you, putting you on the path to global citizenship (c) ISV.

What makes ISV tick? It all starts with our mission and purpose which is:

To support sustainable development initiatives around the world through life-changing volunteer and responsible adventure travel programs designed to positively impact our world and that educate, inspire and result in active global citizens.”

So what is a global citizen?

“A global citizen is someone who identifies as being part of our global community and whose individual actions contribute to enhancing and conserving shared values that benefit all of humanity and our planet.”

Our staff agree, we really like this video which explains it nicely too.

A beautiful personal experience with nature (like this one, above) can literally change your life, inspiring and motivating you to change your attitude and behavior in a way that serves to protect and enhance our natural systems (c) ISV.

What does an ISV global citizen do?

Our Founder and International Director, Randy Sykes, says it like this:

“In simple terms, an ISV global citizen is someone who goes on our program and who consciously feels the heartfelt compassion and awareness for the humanitarian and environmental needs on this planet. Then, when they return home from their trip, our desire is for students to adopt a lifestyle of volunteering to give back to their local community through conservation or humanitarian projects.” For this reason, we are partnering with UNICEF, Habitat for Humanity, CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS and others to help connect our alumni with local volunteering efforts.

Our staff desire that the ISV experience plants a seed inside the hearts of every volunteer. May that seed grow and take root forever in their lives, and contribute to a forest of global citizens (c) ISV

So what makes ISV tick?

The ISV experience is so much more than just a short holiday overseas. We see it as a life-changing experience and a stepping stone to a deeper connection with our planet and one’s local community.

We want every student volunteer to be so incredibly moved by the experience to the point that they are empowered to continue to learn, and to act, in a way that makes the world a better place. For example, in addition to volunteering locally in their home community, we hope that after their ISV experience, our alumni have lower ecological and carbon footprints and also actively support human rights initiatives. As an ISV participant you learn that how we travel, eat, shop, treat each other and vote, etc, all contribute to this goal of contributing to a healthier planet.

In recognition of ISV alumni volunteering locally in their community to make a difference, students can earn the ISV Global Volunteer Citizen Award and U.S. citizens can earn the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

We LOVE testimonies like this below, as it reaffirms we’re doing something right:

“My volunteer experience was an incredible experience and it was an excellent way to learn more about being a responsible traveler and global citizen!”  Sherry Ching, University of Calgary

Developing global citizens is just one part of what makes us tick.
