Finally!  The top three photos from each of the four photo categories of Best Volunteer, Scenic/Cultural, Adventure and Group Photo are below!

Over 1600 individual images were submitted by ISV volunteers as part of this annual photo competition, showcasing the incredible experiences from ISV’s programs.

Photos from South Africa have dominated, winning three of four categories! Also, a special mention goes to Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai Thailand, which features in three of the top photos throughout, where ISV sends “special interest” veterinary and pre-vet students as well as regular conservation volunteers, and we visit there on our Thailand adventure tour to learn about and have meaningful interactions with endangered Asian elephants.

The full list of submissions can be found here on the Photo Contest page, and our FB page albums have each category’s shortlist with other terrific photos!

Thanks to ISV Facebook fans for getting behind our entries and voting. Each first place winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship to travel again with ISV and all shortlisted images will be used throughout ISV’s publications. Congratulations to all our winners, finalists and all entrants for an amazing pictorial overview of how we are IMPACTING OUR WORLD.

Next year’s competition will be opened shortly with volunteers from our May to September 2014 being eligible to take part, being joined by volunteers from the upcoming November 2014 to February 2015 season who are also able to enter. Enjoy the photos!

Title: Midget the Cheetah, Location: Shingwedzi, South Africa, Photographer: Janae Anne Giroux

This is Midget. One of the volunteer's tasks was to spend time with this cheetah cub and get him used to human interaction. When he grows up he will be an ambassador cheetah with the Ann Van Dyk Cheetah Centre and be used to educate children on the cheetah's ecological importance (c) ISV.

Title: Wisdom, Location: Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Mai Thailand Photographer: Garrett Sonntag

2nd place - Eye

My highlight experience was bathing the elephants at ENP. It was amazing because while interacting with them there was no doubt that I was looking at a beautiful and sentient creature. So, I took this picture of their expressive eyes to capture the wisdom and beauty that they emanate (c) ISV

Title: An Unlikely Friendship, Location: Thailand, the trek to a Hmong village, Photographer: Destiny-Joy Kelly

The photo was taken on the adventure tour after a hike up the mountain to a local village. At the top we were looking at a beautiful view with some gorgeous Thai boys.

Title: ISV for Elephants, Location: Chobe National Park, Botswana (Wild Africa Excursion), Photographer: Katherine Wang

The photo is of great friends I made from volunteering. We were mesmerized by the calm elephants just metres in front of us and the beauty of wild animals in Africa. At this moment we were very content on how lucky we all were on this trip to have bonded so well together (c) ISV

Title: Conquering Van Hunks, Location: Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa, Photographer: Kim Do

Reaching the mountain peak was a surreal experience, and to abseil through a cloud - where momentarily we saw nothing but white and felt the air's pressure against our skin - was incredible. The trip overall will never be forgotten © ISV

Title: Bathing Time, Location: Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Mai Thailand, Photographer: Laura Van den honert

In the hot Thailand afternoon, we couldn’t have had more fun than bathing the elephants in the river. Whilst they ate buckets of fruit, we splashed them (and us) with water, cleaning them and cooling them down (c) ISV

Title: Together, we are one, Location: Rancho Campeche, south coast Dominican Republic, Photographer: Alessandra Tantawi

In a world where people are sufficiently self-involved and obsessed with technology it takes a special group of people doing everyday service to make a difference. This experience at ISV has not only opened my eyes to my future pursuing community service but it has inspired me to do my very best to try and make a difference every day (c) ISV

Thanks again to all of ISV’s volunteers. Together we are doing our best to make the world a better place.  Never stop doing everything you can to make a difference. Hopefully these photos have inspired others.
