About Fundraising

Each year, thousands of students raise funds to help pay for their ISV Program. Fundraising is a great way to help finance your ISV Program and can also help you develop personal skills. Fundraising is not easy- it takes time, energy and above all persistence. However, if you start early and follow ISV's guidelines, you'll be well on your way to financing your trip!

Start with People you Know

Begin fundraising by starting off with people you know. Make a list of every potential supporter: aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, friends and co-workers. You never know who will be willing to assist you in your cause. Discuss your trip in person with your supporters if possible.

Once you are confirmed on the ISV program, ISV will provide you with a letter you can send out explaining the opportunity you have to volunteer on an international level and your request for funds to assist you.

Once you have sent the letter to your friends, family, co-workers and the rest of your greater network - start researching businesses and business owners who may also help you. Research the name of the business owner and send them a personalized letter.

Use Your Online Network:

Set up a profile on a crowdsourcing website such as Volunteer Forever - Invite all your friends and online network to support you by giving money online. Tell a story with your profile, use pictures and videos and most of all - SAY THANK YOU!

When the Going Gets Tough...

The most common mistake is giving up after your first letdown. Do not give up after being turned down- persistence is crucial and there are plenty of people to ask. There will be many "No's", and it might take a while for you to get the hang of fundraising, but remember- to receive you must ask.

Say "Thank You"

Remember to thank everyone who supports you and assure them that their funds are well invested. Begin with a positive attitude and keep it throughout this process, and you will be off to a great start to financing your ISV Program.

"Through ISV, I have learned what major issues that we are facing. This experience has given me the opportunity to grow and learn about other cultures and problems facing the environment. I don't think there is anything that could be changed about the program and what it teaches. Thank you for the opportunity to experience this."
~ Chad Pfeif, University of Northern Colorado

"Best time of my life! I met really amazing people and did things I never thought I would do. It's definitely changed my attitude towards life."
~Derek Prothro, UCLA
